A summary history of Valentine's Day.

Valentine's Day is named in honour of Saint Valentine, the patron Saint of lovers who, it is believed was murdered on February 14 AD 270. During the time the Roman emperor Claudius II cancelled all marriage and engagements in Rome, as he was having a hard time getting men to join the military and he believed married men, being emotionally attached to their lovers (wives) and families, did not make good soldiers. However, Valentine secretly join couples despite the ban and He was later caught and reported to emperor Claudius II. Valentine refused to renounce his christian beliefs, was sentenced to be beaten to death with clubs and have his head cut off. When in prison Saint Valentine fell in love with the jailer's daughter who often visit him in the prison . The day he was to be executed, he left a written note for the jailer's daughter which read " Love from your Valentine". It was the Pope who set aside February 14 to honour St. Valentine in AD 496.
