US president Barack Obaa has nominated former pentagon official Ashton Carter as new defebce secretary after the resignation of former defence chief. Mr Carter was previously the pentagon's chief arms buyerand an assistant secretary of defece under former president Bill Cliton. His appointment to the post, replacing outgoing Chuck Hagel who resigned last month, now requires approval from the US senate.
