Magnitude 7.7 Earthquake strikes off Paupa New Guinea.

       A magnitude earthquake measuring 7.5 struck Papua New Guinea, threating a tsunami. The earthquake hit at a depth of 65 kilometres, about 55 kilometres from the city of Kokopo on the island of New Britain, voa reported. There were no immediate reports of damages or injuries. The powerful quake struck at a depth of 40 kilometres and was followed by two further offshore earthquakes in the vicinity which measured 5.7 and 5.0 resectively. A spokesman for the ministry of foreign Affairs and Trade said there were no indications that any New Zealanders had been affected by the quake. An employee at the Rabaul Hotel said when the quake struck, guest and workers at the hotel fled outside, fearing the building would collape, the guardian reported.
