Thousands evacuated in Philippines as powerful typhoon nears.


         The Philippines on Saturday evacuated thousands of people in the northerneastern part of its main island of Luzon, as the country prepares for a powerful typhoon which is expected to make land fail, ibnlive reported. The weather bureau raised storm storm alerts in 19 areas on Luzon, warning that strong winds and intense rain could produce a 2.5 meter high storm surge along the coast areas and landslides in mountainous areas. Seaports were shut across the archipelago, leaving more than 2,000 travellers stranded in Manila, the Philippines' capital. " Our advice is for people on the eastern seaboard to avoid outdoor activities", state weather forcaster Fernando Cada told AFP while adding there was a pissibilities the tyohoon could weaken as it nearlm land.
